The History of Sapphire Valley

Sapphire VAlley Historical Society

Sapphire Valley Resort turns 60 this year!

To celebrate, all resort owners and guests were invited

to a special party at the  Resort’s Community Center

June 21st.

Featuring great music from the 50’s and a fantastic

selection of hotdogs from around the country,

over 300  turned out to celebrate the occasion.

The Sapphire Valley Historical Society prepared

video  presentation showing images form the Resort

over the  years, including some form the 1800’s.  Rick Stargel, President of the Society also provided an update on the  Sapphire Valley Stone Basin mystery, covered in the Chronicle back on late March.

The evening included a special presentation from Walt Green, President of the Sapphire Valley Master Association to Mr. and Mrs. Gene Howerdd, Jr., founders of Sapphire Valley! The Howerdd family purchased several thousand acres north and south of Highway 64 in 1954, operated the Fairfield Inn and built a new golf course in the best part of the valley. Known at that time as the Sapphire Valley Inn and Country Club, the resort as we know it today began 60 years ago!

Ten years later in 1964, Mr. Howerdd Jr. brought southern snow skiing to our area building Ski Sapphire Valley! A celebration for the ski area is under development for this winter.
